Marriage of Verkovensky and Dasha
Why does Varvara Petrovna Stavrogina plan for Stepan Trofimovich Verkhovensky to marry Dasha? He thinks it is to cover up for her son, which make me think Dasha may be pregnant by Nikolai, who is certainly the father of Shatovs wifes baby.
But Dasha is not pregnant. What is Verkoveskys suspicion then? And why does Mrs Stavrogina want them married?

Surrealism in Literature
Within my Disturbing Literature thread many of the interesting titles suggested have been works of surreal fiction though in accordance with the themes of disturbing books much of it has been of the grotesque, profane and depraved kind, but this has peeked my interest in wanting to explore more works of surrealism of both the depraved, and not depraved kind. In general I have always loved surreali

How does moderation work on this forum?
Hi,
I am a new poster and I had a look at the rules before registering.
So I was very surprised when my post about "Tom Jones" in answer to "Disha"
was instantly refused.
It was a descriptive post, there was nothing offensive about it, it was merely intended to help a student of English Literature.
I contacted the forum about it but didn´t get an answer.
Thanks for your help.

The Scarlet Letter or Moby-Dick: which is the better American masterpiece?
I've been reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (two more chapters before I'm finished). I love it very much. I'm a high school senior and contrary to a lot of people I love it deeply. I love its stately and lofty language, its positively medieval story, its thematic richness and ambiguity and ambivalence, the depth of Hester and of the characters, and the deep allegory (it's obvious to

Frog with the Red Dot
Hi everyone, I'm Jonathan. I enjoy writing mostly short stories and poetry. However I do find it difficult to write a short story from start to finish and have it be cohesive, and have it not somehow loose its message or impact somewhere along the middle. A couple weeks ago I wrote this story, which I thought was decent. So I ask of you kindly to not rip me to shreds. Feedback/constructive critici

My Beautiful dark Mind
In all my years of practice as a therapist, I have never come across a patient as odd as Charles Winslow Eaton. The graveyard of gods
[SIZE=3]Roaming above the Silence's howling
And unfolded damp sand
Of the graveyard
Of gods,
Under the weeping sky and furious night,
I stepped on the dusty dreams
Of long gone gods.
Left in the hands of oblivion , the protector of graves,
Those dreams were swept and cleaned,
Cherished and loved.

And unfolded damp sand

Cherished and loved.

Aphorism #154 Do not Believe, or Like, lightly.
Maturity of mind is best shown in slow belief. Lying is the usual thing; then let belief be unusual. He that is lightly led away, soon falls into contempt. At the sametime there is no necessity to betray your doubts in the good faith of others, for this adds insult to discourtesy, since you make out your informant to be either deceiver or deceived.

Disturbing Literature
Out of boredom and because I thought I might get some interesting results I began to do a Google search on most disturbing cartoons but you know how Google likes to predict what you are looking for? So most disturbing books popped up in the search list and that caught my attention. I looked through some of the online lists and it was interesting seeing what different people classify as disturbing.

Why is this particular author nowhere to be found? Is it because he wrote a long time ago? I don't think so, because I think I just saw Chaucer on the list.
Anyway, I wanted to get some opinions on the characters from his novel Tom Jones. What do they suggest? Realism or Romanticism?
Do you think Tom Jones deserved Sophia?

why?
I havent written anything in a while I hope I have improved since my last story!
I constantly question my circumstances. My father tells me to just listen and learn. I find that this statement has always been quite ironic, simply because every adult knows that experience, trial, and error are our best teachers in life. Seeing something happen is just not enough to learn from it.

are you here?
Are you truly living a real life? Or are you still trying to figure out what that means? Is the answer for what living truly is different with each individual? Or do we all serve a common purpose. Is "fun" an illusion? Is a "soulmate" a delusion? Why are we all here and living so differently? What is right and what is wrong? Does any of this even matter in the end?

The Elderly, dealing with them, your relatives and others
I hinted at this in an earlier response to a post by Pendragon, who told a story about his grandfather, but like most middle-aged people, I am now beginning to deal with elderly parents. Thank god they're alive and healthy, at 80, and are absolutely in their right minds, but nonetheless, the realities of being that age are starting to show, and the relationship between them and their offspring, as

Searching for a short story
There is a short story, I believe by Isaac Asimov, about two professors arguing about something along the lines of Zeno's paradox of the tortoise and Achilles. Essentially, a machine is built that shrinks a man in half every time he gets halfway out of the machine. In the end, the man who is inside becomes so small he falls out of the machine because he has gone past the sub-atomic level.

On etiquette
Etiquette is to society what apparel is to the individual. Without apparel men would go in shameful nudity, which would surely lead to the corruption of morals; and without etiquette society would be in a pitiable state and the necessary intercourse between its members would be interfered by needless offences and troubles. If society were a train, the etiquette would be the rails, along wh

Stephen Fry "More Fool Me"
I watched this on Netflix last night and really enjoyed it. Stephen Fry is an old favorite, probably many people here are fans, and he did a live speaking engagement to promote his then (2014) new book "More Fool Me." Partly he talked and told funny stories, partly he read from the work. It was simulcast to theaters all over Britain and the world, apparently. I'm American so I didn't know about it

Reading Barry Lyndon
I can remember the Stanley Kubrick film - a cartoon by Gainsborough as a friend at the time called it.
I've just read the book. Quite different from what I vaguely remember of the film.
If you want an unreliable narrator, here it is, a blatant con man and murderer forever crying up how honourable and noble he is.

The Forgotten Sword
The sword sat collecting dust and cobwebs in the corner of the dingy, dimly lit room. Its formerly ornate scabbard was chipped and cracked in places, from years of misuse and neglect. Layers of grime covered the swords once beautifully intricate pommel, the flickering firelight in the room now danced across its smudged, grimy surface. This was no longer a weapon of war, no longer a mighty instrum

H is for Hawk
"H is for Hawk" is Helen Macdonald's new book that defies genre classification. It is partly a memoir about how she deals with her father's death, partly a book about goshawks and falconry, and partly a critique of T.H. White's life and writing.
White was a falconer who wrote a book about his own experiences with training a goshawk, as well as writing about animals in "The Sword and the Stone

I have a veterinarian question regarding horses' knees. Rex borrowed his father's nag to take part in a hunt. The horse was not very strong, fell over, threw Rex, and broke his knees. The horse was injured but managed to walk home. I read about a horse or pony breaking its knees in another book. It was

My First Short Story
This is a short story I wrote after a bad day. There is a little profanity (sorry, everyone), but please let me know what you think!
It was a January Friday, and the sun was setting. The whole office had gone to a dumpy bar across the street, but it was the closest bar, everyone knew where it was, so no one complained. He had just paid his tab, four beers, and was ready to leave.

Books of a Certain Ilk
By far, my favourite literary treasures are in the vein of Umberto Eco and Borges, be it their fiction or (perhaps more so) their nonfiction. In terms of strictly nonfiction, I look to Douglas Hofstadter (Le ton beau de Marot; Gödel, Escher, Bach) as my sage. Reading works of this stature has led me to all sorts of other books, from Hinton's studies of the fourth dimension and hyperc

What a way to start the year!
First David Bowie falls off his perch, and now Alan Rickman, that suave and dastardly villain of Die Hard and the otherwise execrable Kevin Costner Robin Hood - as well as the Potterine Snape, has joined the choir invisible. Hollywood villany will be forever diminished without his arch expression and sardonic tone to give evil a touch of British "class."

In recent days there has been a resurgence of discussion over gun control, following an Executive Order by the President of the United States. One of the issues under debate is closing the so-called "loophole" over regulation of gun show sales. While sensible measures to curb gun violence is a deadly serious matter, some aspects of the controversy are ripe for satire.

Japanese Reception of Orwell?
Hi all, this is my first post on this forum. I'm hoping some of you might have insights that can help me out. I'm currently working on an undergraduate thesis that is a sort of comparative analysis of Anglophone and Japanese dystopian literature. One element that I'm really missing out on right now is information about the Japanese reception of Orwell, in particular the novel 1984. I can read Japa

How the Action Flows in Dragonquest
I love how the action kicks right off in the Dragonriders of Pern series. Especially in the second book, Dragonquest. It picks right up and immediately the reader is caught up in the story. It is a great way to engage the reader and hook them into the tale.
The action doesn't slow down too much. Whether it be an argument, a fight or a battle, the plot is constantly progressing. The

The Elusive Company
My heart skips beats when I hear faint praise
From a friend who has been so barely brave
As to have read some random phrases
That I have scratched on an architrave;

That swarm in hexadecaphones.
Intimidated, he'll shy and swoon,
And deem such flights degenerate.

The Book of Disquiet
A week or so after finishing this book and returning it to the library, I slowly began to feel the need to re-visit it, as if a lingering mystery needed to be solved. The impression that it left in my mind was somewhat vague, unsettling, luminously beautiful, and not easily put into words. I felt transformed somehowas if a subtle shift had occurred in my perceptions and thought processes.

I watched the first episode last night and thought it was great. When a favourite book gets adapted it can be a disappointment, but so far so good. Minus Time & Space
We will always raise such a question whether there will be soul or ghost after death. I also ponder over it. After long years of meditation, I think I got the answer. I here don't talk about heaven or hell, nor about God. I speak from the viewpoint of scientific nature.
Humans live in the real nature, real time and space, which I define as plus (positive) time and space. Where does the soul or

Hello everyone.
My favourite reading topics are: Crime, journalism, espionage, intelligence and war, either novels or chronicles. I find them informative about what occurs into real investigations, bureaucracy, intelligence services, strategies, operations, missions, as well as technology and methods used in the years in which the novel/chronicle takes place.
