Books I could not finish in 2015

In 2015 I read some excellent books and re-read a couple of my favourites (Eugene Onegin - Pushkin and Fredy Neptune - Les Murray)

However, 2015 was also the year that for the very first time I came across a couple of books that I just could not manage to finish.

'The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon' (Richard Zilmer) was one. I know this book has many fans but for me the writing was unbelievably po

This is my new Story I just had published. I wanted to share it...

The Cicadas serenaded me on a steamy, weekend night as I made my way to the pay phone, across from the Checkers burger joint. That was my usual midnight route on those Westside sidewalks. Those routines helped to kill the boredom and stagnation that attacked my restless mind. My brother’s friend John was living in Hermosa Beac

As a writer it is occassionally pretty helpful to get other people's opinions on something you've written, an idea you've thought of, etc. Not to mention it can be rather fun and exciting to tell people about your latest idea, show them your latest bit of prose, etc. But I'm always rather worried, considering how importa

Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore

For those who have read or are well versed in Murakami's Kafka on the Shore, what are your thoughts for a paper thesis along the lines of this: "Murakami uses western iconography of Johnny Walker and Colonel Sanders to characterize modernization and the ambiguity of apparitions."

This is just a starting point and the thesis will most likely change by the end of the first draft paper. Tha

December eighth

I'm put to mind of December eighth long ago
because it was a day I had to fight the fight
for my very life.
It was a day I lost my cushioned home
for caring arms to nestle in.
It was a day I first heard a recognizable voice,
un-muffled now, yet echoing joyfully
through my ears, and my scaly eyes
beheld an alluring spectrum of colors
canvased against a dark silhouette.

I no longer had to rely, and

I have never seen a black sheep before, but I know one
he was a rejected soul once his adolescent years had begun
All he ever fancied was to find his place in his family
but was cast to the wind as an Autumn leaf free-falling from a tree

Why was he treated as the odd child, he had yet to understand
though he grew up with that mentality even unto the stature of a man

Beauty often dwells in youth. At sight of a charming girl, everyone will exclaim, "My eyes! What a great beauty!" The male stare with a thrill of admiration; the female gaze with a sigh of envy. Use of Suspense in Dragonflight

One thing I've noticed in Dragonflight is that McCaffrey is very good at building up suspense and keeping the reader on the edge of their seat! She seems to be able to build up the scene just right, then suddenly release critical information. An example of this would be when Lessa and Ramoth accidentally jumped between times to Ruatha.
