Pushing too Hard

A mature woman I know just had a birthday. She's keenly aware that she's pushing 70. 'Pamela' wants no truck with 70.

"70, you see, is definitely old." she explained. "It's over the hill."

I give her a look and even with the Jimmy Choos on her face her mug is remarkably pretty.

"Listen, Babygirl," I tell her. " When I was reading Conrad one time, some of

The mad dog unbound

The mad dog unbound

A mad dog bites people everywhere
It has got rid of the chain
And come back to its wild nature there
It is more fierce than a wolf then
With its tail up straight, its sharp teeth out
And its eyes wide open
It pretends to have forgotten all about its past
Fawning on its master with its slavish face and flattering bones

Aphorism #274 Be Attractive.

magnet of your pleasant qualities more to obtain goodwill than good deeds, but apply it to all. Merit is not enough unless supported by grace, which is the sole thing that gives general acceptance, and the most practical means of rule over others. To be in vogue is a matter of luck, yet it can be encouraged by skill, for art can best take root on a soil favoured by na

I just got into reading and I feel like I am really behind.

So I just got into reading recently and I feel like I am really behind in comparison to other people. I am a computer science and mathematics student. I do my best to read during the school year, but it is pretty difficult sometimes. I have read Tolstoy, Cormac McCarthy, Hemingway, Wilde, Fitzgerald, and some nonfiction books. I am now in the process of reading Shakespeare. I recently read Macbeth

so as to know their intentions. Cause known, effect known, beforehand in the disposition and after in the motive. The melancholy man always foresees misfortunes, the backbiter scandals; having no conception of the good, evil offers itself to them. A man moved by passion always speaks of things differently from what they are; it is hi

Hedonism and asceticism

Two of my favorite literary figures, GK Chesterton and GB Shaw, were, in many ways, opposites. Shaw was an atheist and a pragmatist; Chesterton a Catholic and a romantic. They staged several public debates, during one of which (legend goes) Shaw said, "If I were as fat as you, Mr. Chesterton, I'd hang myself."

"If I ever decide to hang myself," Chesterton responded, "I'll use you for the rope

Recommendations for types of books I'm looking for (Japanese Horror).

I was wondering if anybody might be able to help me find some books with a few specific descriptions I have. Basically, I'm looking for some Japanese horror books. However, the kind I'm mainly looking for are some that take place roughly in the 1800's or earlier (Meiji period, Heian period, etc.). Doesn't matter to me when the books were written. Depending on the story and situations, I wouldn't m

Richard III - standalone play?

I have the opportunity to see Richard III on stage, which I'd very much like to do. However, I know that Richard III is part of a series, and I don't have to read all the other plays before I go to see it. Would my experience of the play be very much marred by the unfamiliarity with the rest of the series, or would I have just as fine an experience?

Shadows of Tomorrow

A young man lay on the grass, almost motionless, as a groan escaped his lips.

[I]“Duck!”

The taller youth fell flat on his face in the deep snow, the back of his head throbbing. He could hear the laughter of his best friend, though it sounded far off, almost as if he were in a cave. He slowly stood and turned around, mischief dancing in his dark eyes.

Aphorism #272 Sell Things by the Tariff of Courtesy.

Aphorism #272 Sell Things by the Tariff of Courtesy.

You oblige people most that way. The bid of an interested buyer will never equal the return gift of an honourable recipient of a favour. Courtesy does not really make presents, but really lays men under obligation, and generosity is the great obligation. To a right-minded man nothing costs more dear that what is given him: you sell it him twice

Arnie Waiters

Arnie Waiters died with his secret.
Screeches shattered the silence,
a wailing, phantom and strident
and a hiss like water leaking
out of cracked pipes. Maybe

with their red jackets, fighting
wintertime, saw a crackling bonfire.

How many books do you usually read a year?

I have lots of free time, but I want to get an idea of how much I could read a year if I actually had a full time job, a family life, and a social life.

The Power of Lama

Samuel Lama was sitting back in his chair. He was hella cool. So cool that he didn’t even want to be in school. School wasn’t for the cool. But despite his coolness, there was no escape from the school’s schoolness. Schoolness is a word Samuel made up and it was synonymous with lameness. Only, Samuel didn’t actually know what ‘Synonymous’ meant because he never paid attention in school due to its

Robinson Crusoe and The Martian

I am quite enjoying Robinson Crusoe. At first I wondered whether it was going to be any good. Something dramatic would happen to Crusoe, then something else, then something else. I wondered whether its reputation was mainly the result of being first English novel. It got better after he was shipwrecked. Daniel Defoe based the story on the experiences of a Scottish castaway called Alexander Selkirk
